The Greatest War

As a child, my friends and I would often play war – or any assortment of pretend semi-violent activity, really. With invisible weapons that were only as powerful as the sounds we could make, advanced shield technology that would allow us to dodge bullets by simply shouting “nuh-uh, you missed me!” and dramatic deaths that would have brought a tear to your eye – war was a fun game.

War just never seemed to be a scary thing. Even the warring action figures we played with had no fear – some even smiled all the time. They wouldn’t break under the most devastating, tortuous conditions, and even if they did, somehow they would always find themselves back to normal a few days later. What I never knew at the time was that while it was always a game for us, for them, it was more. It was a way of life. It was the greatest war.
